Description:
In the 850s, the cost of maintaining a very large, standing Marine Corp as the "grand army" layer of the military was becoming painfully apparent. It was decided that to help relieve costs, a new solution was to be found, and it was decided that war droids should make up the rank and file - easily mass-produced, immune to hunger, sickness, and psionics, they could merely be stored in peace time and their maintenance for active units would be an infinitely smaler fraction of the cost of maintaining regular troops, plus individual units would require little training. A bid was put out and several corporations answered, but Subaru won it with its war droid, APE-IU. A short, stocky droid, the APE-IU is very basic, basically being an armored drum protecting electronics and four arms ending in a claw and two light cannons each, the APE-IU proved to be the most flexible, cheapest, and most easily produced unit fielded during testing. Featuing reversible limbs, the APE-IU can configure itself to run or walk in just about any conceivable way.
Control of the APE-IU works on three seperate tiers: the first is a universal battlenet, a major subroutine which will actually be handled by Anikar herself, makes giving orders to troops and receiving information from the front lines seamless and instantaneous. The connection is maintained via quantum entanglement. The second tier is the local battlenet, from which a designated master command and control operator in the theatre observes and directs troops, allowing more intimate commands for surgical strikes. Finally, each unit has a basic operating system programmed with static hunter-killer theorems. The droids can thus operate efficiently even if one or two of the other systems fail. While it lacks protection against other, common agents (i.e. Ion Cannons) the war droids can be so easily mass-produced such protections would be overkill to include.
